Mica is a group of sheet silicate materials, with nearly perfect basal cleavage, the property to split along crystallographic structural planes. Mica’s atoms are arranged in a hexagonal sheet-like structure. The common forms of mica for commercial use are muscovite and phlogopite. Muscovite possesses electrical properties and is often used in capacitors for high frequency and radio frequency. Other uses for dry mica include asphalt shingles. Sheet mica is sometimes used for aerospace components.
